Class #2

I officially think Jason is a little bored at our classes... he almost fell asleep last night! We learned about pain management, mainly what kinds of drugs they can give you to take the edge off (but that don't last very long) and epidurals. 70% of women who deliver at St. Luke's choose an epidural - I didn't realize it would be that high! I hate to say this, but I'm going to anyway - right now my mind set is that if I choose an epidural, I'll be kind of a wuss about the whole thing. I'm certainly not saying that I won't keep my options open, but I don't want to resort to one just cause it will be easier on me. Don't know if that makes sense or not! There are definite pros and cons to it, which we also went over. I think it will just come down to how I'm feeling at the time, and since it's the first time, I have NO clue!
I thought maybe I could opt for a "light" epidural, but St. Luke's does all or nothing, so that's no longer an option.
We also practiced some labor positions, went over a few things from last week, learned another breathing technique, and talked about what to bring in our labor bag (things to take with you to the hospital). And no, Jason did NOT put on the empathy belly, even though his chiropractor said he could. He chickened out, but was sure laughing at the husbands who did put it on!

I wanted to see jason in the belly, oh well. Ya keep your mind open to an epidural. I didnt have one with shelby and by the time i wanted one it was way too late. This last time i wish i would of had one, so my mind is very open to the possibility since im a back labor person. Im sure you will be just fine and do great, and no one will think you are a wuss, you had a baby and no man could do that lol....

What are the cons to having one? I don't really know anything about it. Your such a strong person when it comes to pain I'm sure you will be fine. Of course, easy for me to say! :)

Cons? You're numb from the waist down, so it can be harder for you to feel and know when to push, and can sometimes slow down the dilation process. You can't get up and walk around or stand up, and they say gravity helps get things going. Having your back poked (but needles don't bother me, so I'm okay with that) Also, they give you a catheter cause you won't be able to feel when your bladder is full. Those are the main ones. :)

WHAT!?!?! I can't believe you let Jason laugh at the other guys. I would have told him, if you don't put it on, you don't get to laugh!! ;)j/k
Yeah, keep your options open. I realized in labor that I was a HUGE wimp, and wanted an epidural (the other nice thing about was that I started laboring at home at 11pm, so with only 1 hour of sleep, I wanted it so I could sleep for a little while.) However, mine was way too strong, and it made my recovery hard. I'm really going to rethink it next time. Though, it is so different for every person.
