BFD Fitness Challenge

Yesterday at work we got an email announcing the Boise Fire Department's Fitness Challenge. After quickly reading through it, I deleted it, thinking it was only for the FF's. A little while later, Michelle, one of my co-workers, comes into my office and asks if I want to join her and another co-worker in doing the challenge; Chief said that if we rank at the top, we can get vacation time, too! I NERVOUSLY agreed.
Yes, it's definitely time to get back in shape. Yes, I need an extra push, something to make me accountable. The nervous part comes in having to do the caliper test. Has anyone ever done one of these? Apparently they choose 5 spots and hook up this clamp-type thing, pinching your skin...it somehow reads on a gauge and tells you a number, identifying how much body fat you have. Okay, not so bad if it were done by like, a doctor or somebody, but one of the HOTTEST firefighters this department has? Um, yeah, kinda nervous! Or should I say embarrassed? ugh.
So in 2 weeks I do the caliper test, and then we have 12 weeks of the challenge, and then do the caliper test again. Whoever has lost the most body fat percentages wins. I guess we have guys trained in this kind of thing, so if I want to ask them about an exercise plan and a diet plan, I can do that also.
I find that I can eat right, but once I get home in the evenings, it's all over. My time is consumed with Anthony, dinner, dishes, lunches, laundry... you know, you've been there. By the time I put Anthony to bed, I'm exhausted and don't feel like exercising. Somehow I need to find a time during the day when I can. We're going to start walking at lunch, but once we hit the 90 degree point, I'm not doing that anymore. I hate being all sweaty at work. Yes, I'm picky!
So wish me luck!

That's cool that you are in it with other people trying to get fat. Linda had a caliper test at the gym and they told her she was obese at 129 lbs. If she was obese I had to ask myself what I was.

I was wondering about that comment....!!
Okay, so now I'm even more nervous cause it's not like these guys keep things confidential... they are blabber mouths! My friend says I can just blame it on having the baby!

Hey Trisha! That's awesome! It's always easier when you have people doing it with you. Remember our Taebo days ;) I started a weight loss journey last August and what I found that worked for me was counting calories. I used this website called my calorie counter. It's free unless you want to use some of the upgrades. I agree with everyone else...you just had a baby!! No worries =)

Hey Trish... Remember you also have a friend (ME) in the fitness/health field!!! I know a bit about calipers; I test approximately 10-15 people a year now but at my other job at WSU I would test 30+ people in a month. It is nothing to worry about. Just think of it as a starting point. It is also not COMPLETELY accurate, make sure that the person who tests you the first time is the same one who tests you at the end so that you can narrow down some of the spaces of error but tester error as well as just in general there is a range of error (they say about 5-7 points).

If you need any help, a workout, or have any questions please feel free to contact me, that is my job, my life... I didn't get a masters for nothin (I love to do this stuff, especially for friends)!!!

Also, as mentioned before, a skinny (small) person can be obese. I call them "skinny-fat people" which means they are all skin, fat, bones, and very little muscle... a healthy and fit person is not necessarily one who wears the smallest pant size!! My former roommate for instance, she is 5'11- 220 lbs of SHEER muscle and boy does she have a big bootie and her legs are the most muscular I have ever seen! I think she wears a size 16-18+ BUT she recently competed in a Fire Fighter Test in Montana and kicked some major bootie, she is also is ranked #2 in the world for highland games (where they throw totem poles and stuff in kilts) AND she can kick any girls royal behind as well as lift more than most boys!!!

Good luck with the challenge. Sounds like a great opportunity to get fit with a support group. If you need any motivation let me know...I just started a fitness challenge too...I'm now just about 2 weeks in.
